Reserve a season in one place and stop being a visitor

A season is fifty six nights at one address, and the reason to reserve a season in one place is that the place stops performing for you somewhere around the twelfth day. What is left after that is the part most people are actually buying, although few say so when they send the dates. Thirteen places carry a season figure on all thirteen places at all three lengths. Your flight is your own arrangement, and the company that operates the property bills you directly once it confirms.

The third morning

By the third morning you have the shape of the days. You know which bakery opens at seven and which at nine, and that the stop across from the church is the one going the right way. Working that out takes three days at any length. In fifty six nights it is behind you before the first load of laundry is dry, and everything after it is the stay itself.

The Tuesday in week four

Somewhere in the fourth or fifth week there is a Tuesday with nothing on it. You have seen the thing you came for. You have had the good breakfast twice and it is now just breakfast. This is the hard part of a season and it is worth knowing before you buy one. Some people find that Tuesday is the entire reason to be there, because it is the first day in years with nothing in it. Others find it flat and want to be moving by the weekend. Work out which one you are while you are still choosing a length.

What you get right, and what you keep getting wrong

By the middle of it you shop like a resident. You know the day the market has fish and the two hours every afternoon when nothing is open. You have a barber. You buy a cheap knife because the kitchen knife is blunt, and it stays in the drawer for whoever comes next. Someone at the counter you use on Thursdays starts putting your order together before you have said it, and that is the detail people describe first when they get home.

You will still be getting things wrong at the end. Most people never learn the recycling days, never quite say the street name the way it is said locally, and are still caught out by the shop that closes Monday morning rather than Sunday. Fifty six nights is long enough to live somewhere and short enough to remain the person who gets that wrong.

What the money does

Your own spending changes shape around the tenth day. The first week goes on eating out, because you do not yet know where anything is. Then you find the market, the kitchen starts working, and the daily amount falls without anyone deciding that it should. In exchange you pay for things a visitor never pays for: a haircut, a pair of shoes repaired, a fan in July, a monthly bus pass instead of single tickets. The stay itself sits in one cell of the matrix, and each length carries its own figure for each place. Divide by the nights if you want the per night number.

Four days of rain

It rains for four days in a row at some point in most seasons. In a week that is the whole trip. In fifty six nights it is one week of a different kind: the laundry gets done properly, the afternoon goes on a book, you find the one indoor room in town where people sit. Neither of those is the better purchase. They are two purchases, and the difference is what you pick on the three lengths set out side by side.

Work, and the hours it takes

A season is the length people take when the work comes with them. In practice that means a fixed block of hours rather than a vacation: out in the morning and at the table from two, or the reverse, where the time difference puts your working hours in the evening. It goes well when the table is a real table and the connection is steady.

Say in the request that you will be working. This office then asks the operating company about the table, the connection and whether there is a second room with a door, and that answer comes back in writing alongside the figure.

The language

The first two weeks buy you the words for shops and numbers. Around week three the people who had been switching to English for you stop bothering. By the end you follow about a third of what is said to you and little of what is said around you. The vocabulary you own is the vocabulary of your own week: the market, the hardware shop, the bus, the drain in the bathroom.

Who should take a different length

Take a week if there is one specific thing you are going for and a job that will not move. Take three weeks if you want the back half of the stay to feel unlike the front half but there is a date you have to be home by. Take a season if the work travels with you, or you are between things, or you have wanted for years to be somewhere long enough to get bored in it.

Anyone who wants to see four places should book four separate weeks. A season buys depth in one place and it is a poor way to cover ground. And if you want your days scheduled for you, this is the wrong purchase at any figure, because fifty six nights will not fill themselves and are not meant to.
